Environmental Policy
Ceilume recognizes that preserving natural resources by minimizing adverse environmental impacts is vital, and we are committed to providing all of our customers with high quality, environmentally friendly products.
We have a longstanding commitment to conserving natural resources and protecting the health and well being of our customers by:
Reusing and Recycling
We at Better Than Tin Ceiling Tiles are dedicated to environmental conservation, and our insistence on recycling at our factory and the recyclability of our paintable white products (and our original line of ceiling tiles available for purchase at www.ceilume.com) is just one way that we demonstrate that dedication. The benefits of recycling and recyclability are numerous as the reprocessing of used materials prevents needless waste from being sent to landfills and reduces the consumption of raw materials.
Developing Safe Products
Introduction to IAQ
Over the last several years much attention has been focused on air pollution. Most urban cities now have "Save the Air" programs in place to minimize air pollution caused by vehicle emissions, supplying the commuting public with free public transportation for the day. Up until recently, not many scientists had paid much attention to the quality of air within homes and other buildings, despite the fact that US government research indicates that people spend approximately 90% of their time indoors.
In fact, in many cases, the air within buildings can actually be more polluted than the air outside. Couple that fact with the amount of time most people spend inside, and you have a recipe for a health related disaster.
Causes of Indoor Pollutants
Poor indoor air quality can be caused by asbestos, formaldehyde, household cleaning chemicals, lead, nitrogen dioxide, radon, tobacco smoke, respirable particles and biological pollutants like bacteria, mold, mildew and fungus.
How Can Ceilume Help?
Ceilume is the first ceiling tile ever to meet the stringent GREENGUARD Environmental Institute's (GEI) indoor air quality standards for low emitting materials, and we are continuing that legacy with the Better Than Tin ceiling tile line.
Our ceiling tiles were tested for all individual volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) including formaldehyde, respirable particles, ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon dioxide emissions in a controlled and representative indoor environment that allows the product to produce the emissions in a realistic manner similar to the way the product would emit in a home or office. This process can be easily translated into real world scenarios and allows the product use to be evaluated for health, irritation, and odor concerns for a wide range of indoor environments. For more information, please see the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute website at www.greenguard.org.
Creating New Green Products
Here at Ceilume we strive continuously to create new green products and make current products more environmentally efficient.
RPET Ceiling Tiles
Scheduled for full market release in the third quarter of 2010, Ceilume Sustainable Ceiling Tiles are made from revolutionary Ceilume-P40-Plus, and contain 40% post consumer recycled material - PET bottles diverted from landfills. There are no toxic emissions during manufacture, and tiles are GREENGUARD Environmental Institute Certified for Indoor Air Quality and Children & Schools. Installation is dust-free, requiring no special tools, personal protective safety equipment, or job site cleanup. Ceilume Sustainable Ceiling Tiles have already been honored with recognition in the Innovative Materials Category of the 2010 American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Bloom Awards and they haven't even been released yet!
Corn Based Ceiling Tiles
Working with bio-based resin suppliers in the United States and abroad, Ceilume has created the first functioning ceiling tile prototypes made entirely of corn based, biodegradable plastic.
Keratin Based Ceiling Tiles
In conjunction with a USDA pilot program to create bio-based polymer from agriculture waste, Ceilume is in the early stages of investigating the potential of plastic made from keratin, a substance derived from chicken feathers.
Ethanol Based Ceiling Tiles
Using ethanol as a feed stock for vinyl is not a new concept, though until recently the economics have not been practical. Ceilume is in discussion with Brazil's largest resin manufacture, encouraging them to revisit this technology in light of today's economic and environmental climate.
High Performance Thermal Ceiling Tiles
Capitalizing on the complementary thermal characteristics of surface geometry and "captive" air spaces that are unique to Ceilume, we are experimenting with thermal "stacks" using our face panels, AcoustoTherm Backpanels, and custom "intermediate" panels to greatly enhance up-flow and down-flow R-Values and thermal performance, while maintaining 100% recyclability and GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality and Children & Schools Certification.
